Bikram Sau, who operates a modest roadside stall selling puffed rice snack mix in Jhargram, became an overnight sensation on April 19 when the Prime Minister’s convoy paused unexpectedly during the high-intensity West Bengal Assembly election campaign. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped out of his vehicle, interacted briefly with Sau about his family background, education, and daily routine, and purchased a packet of the snack for 10 rupees. The interaction, described as informal and spontaneous, was recorded on video and rapidly circulated across media platforms, drawing widespread public attention to the vendor’s stall.

Sau, originally from Gaya in Bihar and long settled in Jhargram with his family, had been earning a modest daily income of approximately 1,000 to 1,200 rupees from his roadside business before the incident. Following the viral moment, his stall reportedly became a focal point for television crews and social media influencers, transforming his routine livelihood into a brief but intense public spectacle. The development also became a political talking point, with leaders of the Trinamool Congress dismissing the episode as scripted political theatre.

However, the situation has reportedly taken a disturbing turn in recent days. Sau has alleged that he has been receiving repeated threatening phone and video calls from numbers traced to Pakistan and Bangladesh. According to his complaint, callers have issued abusive messages, displayed weapons during video calls, and directly threatened to destroy his stall with explosives and kill him. He stated that the repeated threats have left him in fear for his life and his family’s safety.

Local police have registered a formal complaint and initiated an investigation into the origin of the international calls. Authorities are currently examining the numbers involved and attempting to trace their sources. Security arrangements for Sau and his stall are also being evaluated in response to the alleged threats.
